Abstract: Fresco fragments from archaeological excavations of churches built by the Nemanjić dynasty of Serbia between the 12th and 14th century were analysed by means of pXRF, Raman and SEM/EDS spectroscopy. The samples originate from the monasteries of St. Nicholas and Holy Virgin (1158–1168), Pillars of St. George (1170), from the narthex of the Holy Virgin — Studenica (ca. 1234), as well as monasteries Mileševa (1234–1236) and Banjska (1313–1317). The identified pigments are mostly natural earth pigments with addition of cinnabar or lead oxide for the reds. In some cases, a lapis lazuli blue pigment was found. The black pigment is carbon based and white is calcite. This contribution discuss how the fresco techniques changed during the ages and their relation to old Ermineias.
