Examinations of the medieval wall paintings in Crac des Chevaliers (Syria)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The UNESCO World Heritage site of Crac des Chevaliers castle is one of the most important and largest Crusader ortifications of the Levant where former research did hardly touch upon its edieval wall paintings preserved in the main hapel. Following the devastations of the recent war, a new restoration program was launched with Hungarian support and in the framework of the activities of the yro‑Hungarian Archaeological Mission research and conservation of the in‑situ murals in the chapel was started in 2022. The excavation of the mural paintings has revealed a number of previously unknown details. In addition to on‑site surveys and investigations (ED‑XRF), the investigations (OM, PFIB‑SEM) continued at the laboratories of the Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering of the University of Miskolc. The analysis of the wall paintings helps to understand some of the damaged and incomplete depictions and gives an accurate picture of the painting technique and the use of materials.
