The Role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Responding to COVID-19 to Remove Education Barriers

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The primary aim of this study is to examine the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in mitigating the educational barriers exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Data for this analysis was gathered from several key sources, including the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) Presidents Forum Series (03092020), the UNESCO report titled “Education in a Post-COVID World,” and the ECLAC-UNESCO report on “Education in the Time of COVID-19,” along with other relevant research articles. The utilization of ICTs in educational institutions has proven to be instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by both educators and students as a result of the pandemic. This study highlights the various advantages and disadvantages associated with the adoption of ICTs in education, as well as the disparities in access and effectiveness across different regions. The findings underscore the need for targeted, content-based and pedagogy-driven interventions to bridge the educational gaps, particularly for the over 1.5 billion students whose learning has been disrupted by prolonged school closures. It is critical to leverage and optimize ICT resources to ensure the continuity of education globally. Furthermore, it is imperative that international organizations, including the United Nations (UNO), governments, and funding bodies, collaborate to foster global solidarity in support of education. A comprehensive, forward-thinking strategy must be developed to address the enduring challenges of COVID-19 and to envision the future trajectory of global education.
