Abstract: Mineral carbonation is a process of binding carbon dioxide in the reaction with various natural or synthetic minerals leading to the formation of carbonates, so this method is proposed for CO2 capture. The problem in mineral carbonation technologies is the efficiency of CO2 capture and the quality of the obtained carbonate product. Therefore, in this work, 1,4-butanediol (BUD) was proposed as an organic additive that significantly improves the course of mineral carbonation of gypsum. Mineral carbonation of gypsum in the presence of ammonia with the addition of BUD was tested. The research focused mainly on the effect of BUD on the CO2 capture efficiency and the characteristics of the precipitated powder. The experiments were done at 1,4-butanediol concentrations in the 0.0 - 0.5 mol/dm3 range. The synthesized powders were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface area measurement, particle size distribution, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was shown that the presence of BUD improved the CO2 capture efficiency in the studied system. Moreover, with the increase in BUD concentration, the purity of powder relating to calcium carbonate and vaterite content increased to 83% and 90%, respectively. The calcium carbonate-rich powder contained mainly spherical vaterite particles, and the surface area and average particle size increased with the increase of BUD amount.
