Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The present study focused on gender bias in Indian advertisements. This analysis was based on data obtained from the study "Gender Bias and Inclusion in Advertising in India," published in 2021 by UNICEF and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. The study analyzed the characters in 1,000 advertisements from 2019, most of which were TV commercials. The key findings from the analysis revealed that female and male characters were equally represented in advertisements and were portrayed across lower, middle, and upper-class categories in a balanced manner. However, the majority of the characters had light skin tones. Female characters were consistently depicted as slim, whereas male characters appeared in various body types. Additionally, female characters were presented as significantly more attractive and glamorous than their male counterparts. Compared to female characters, male characters were more frequently associated with business and financial transactions and were shown as more influential. A larger proportion of female characters were portrayed as married compared to male characters. On the other hand, no gender bias was observed in activities such as social interactions, food consumption, driving, or exercising. Similarly, no gender-based differences were found in the presence of male and female characters in settings such as shops, cars, kitchens, gift houses, bars, bathrooms, or schools.
