From Battlefield to Big Screen: Tracing the Origins of Israeli Cinema Through the Archives of the IDF Film Unit
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Film Unit ( Yehidat HaHasrata ) was created in August 1948 and operated for only six years before its dissolution in April 1954. During its short life, the Unit captured critical moments in the young nation's history and nurtured the visual storytelling practices that shaped Israeli filmmaking for decades. Based in Jaffa, near Tel Aviv's cultural hub, and led by an experienced commanding officer, the Unit became a training ground for future directors, cameramen, and technical professionals. Its cinematic techniques and narrative approaches transitioned from documenting wartime immediacy to supporting the needs of the nascent state, equipping filmmakers with skills and connections vital to Israel's emerging film industry. Drawing on IDF archive materials this article reconstructs the history of the unit and its contribution to the formation of the Israeli film industry.
