Socio-Economic Impact of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge on Regional Development in Bangladesh

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Infrastructure development is a major contributor to economic growth, and the Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMB) in Bangladesh is an example of such infrastructure that can uplift regional economies and provide a better standard of living for the citizens. As such, the present study investigates the socio-economic impact of the PMB of Zajira Upazila in Shariatpur District by examining the conditions before (2011) and after (2023) the bridge was constructed. Employing statistical analysis, GIS tools, and visual aids, the study highlights transformations from agriculture-based livelihoods to non-agricultural employment, accompanied by improved road networks and increased household access to electricity. Results also highlight the changes in land use, characterised by fewer water bodies, less green space, and more urbanised areas. This research reinforces the importance of the PMB as a driving force for economic diversification and regional development, particularly with increased connectivity. This analysis provides essential insights for policymakers and planners regarding the study and the bridge's role in sustainable development, also highlighting the bridge's potential to inform future infrastructure endeavours.
