Gender-affirming care is life-saving care: a response to international funding cuts for trans people in South Africa

Abstract: On Jan 20, 2025, US Executive Order 14168 was enacted, effectively terminating federal funding for programmes that promote inclusive support for the health and wellbeing of transgender individuals. Just over a month later, on Feb 26, 2025, the administration revealed a drastic 90% reduction in US foreign aid contracts directly assisting vulnerable communities, exacerbating an already fragile situation for those dependent on international support. These policies not only undermine crucial health and human rights initiatives, but also signal an outright rejection of trans identities.
