Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article analyzes the current state of the physical education system in higher education institutions of Ukraine and highlights its role in shaping students’ physical and psycho-emotional health, as well as in developing their professional competencies. The key challenges hindering the effective functioning of the system have been identified, including the inconsistency of traditional approaches with contemporary demands, low levels of physical activity among students, reduction in instructional hours for the «Physical Education» discipline, insufficient material and technical resources, and the negative consequences of martial law, which has limited access to infrastructure and increased psychological stress among students. The article emphasizes the need for a comprehensive renewal of the physical education system in accordance with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine «On Higher Education», the Concept for the Development of Daily Sports, and the Strategy for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports until 2028. These policy documents define strategic directions for the transformation of the field – namely, inclusivity, a focus on health promotion, digitalization, and quality assurance. Innovative approaches currently being implemented in higher education institutions have been analyzed, including the use of digital platforms, fitness trackers for monitoring physical activity, video workouts, and mobile applications. The potential and challenges of developing professionally oriented physical training have been identified. This type of training fosters specialized motor skills essential for professional activities but requires further individualization and methodological improvement. A comprehensive approach to modernizing the physical education system in Ukrainian higher education institutions is proposed, aimed at increasing its effectiveness and meeting current challenges. The approach includes infrastructure upgrades, the introduction of motivational mechanisms, professional development of teaching staff, the advancement of inclusiveness, and the digital transformation of physical education. Special attention is given to the need to update the regulatory framework, taking into account inclusive approaches, professionally oriented physical training and digital tools.
