From Object to Result: Approaches to Unveiling the Artistic Integrity of Choral Works in Pavlo Muravskyi’s Conducting Style
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the distinctive features of Pavlo Muravskyi’s conducting style, characterized by a profound understanding of musical dramaturgy, intonational purity, an impeccable cantilena, and the timbral unity of choral sound. The analysis examines both dynamic and stable elements within the musical score in Muravskyi’s interpretations, highlighting their role in achieving the artistic integrity of choral works. A comparative analysis of archival audio recordings of choral compositions conducted by Muravskyi enables the identification of specific interpretative techniques employed by the Maestro. Key characteristics of his style are revealed, including his nuanced approach to metrorhythm, the use of timbral plasticity as an expressive device, and the theatricality inherent in his performances. The primary tools of Muravskyi’s interpretative approach are identified: agogics, dynamic contrasts, phrasing, articulation nuances, and the differentiated delivery of the literary text. Special attention is devoted to his interpretations of Ukrainian folk songs and works based on the poetry of Taras Shevchenko, where a balance between academic precision and vivid emotional expressiveness is emphasized. The study demonstrates that Muravskyi’s conducting style is rooted in natural intonational rendering, organic tempo-rhythm, emotional openness, and logical musical form — all of which contribute to a powerful artistic impact. The significance of Muravskyi’s contribution to the development of Ukrainian choral art is underscored, particularly his role in preserving national vocal traditions and shaping a new school of conducting interpretation. The scholarly and practical value of the findings is substantiated, offering a systematic understanding of the specific features of conducting interpretation in Ukrainian choral music, with potential applications in performance, academia, and the pedagogical training of choral conductors.
