Use of mobile devices and hands-free technologies: state of the art and insights into drivers’ behaviour
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Research on the use of mobile devices by drivers has become increasingly critical in addressing road safety concerns. Numerous studies have consistently demonstrated that the use of mobile phones while driving poses a significant risk, contributing to a higher likelihood of accidents and impaired driving performance. Texting, calling, and engaging with mobile apps divert a driver’s attention away from the road, resulting in delayed reaction times and compromised situational awareness. The consequences of these distractions are evident in the rising number of road accidents attributed to mobile device use. The need to mitigate this issue has prompted various initiatives, including legislative measures, public awareness campaigns, and advancements in hands-free technologies. Advancements in hands-free technologies, such as touchscreen commands and Bluetooth connectivity, do not always provide safer alternatives for drivers connected on the go. In this context a comprehensive understanding and accurate insights into public behaviour, opinions, and the impact of possible interventions are required. Combining inquiry through interviews with statistical data analysis, this paper aims at understanding individual experiences about conventional and unconventional use of mobile devices while driving, shedding light on drivers’ attitudes to tailor possible measures, aimed at reducing the risk of accidents depending on inappropriate behaviours.
