The Applications of Brain-Computer Interface in Elders

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system that is based upon a computer, collects signals from the brain, which are then analyzed and displayed by an output device. As a current-day popular trending technology, there is potential that BCI can help with the health of elders since this group of population is experiencing both physical and cognitive decline. BCI is mainly categorized into two parts: invasive and non-invasive BCI and each of them can be used in different contexts. Then the paper addressed the use of BCI in both physical rehabilitation and cognitive improvement, especially for the elderly population, how BCI can be applied for treatment, and analyzed BCI’s advantages and disadvantages for being used. Finally, the paper addressed BCI from various societal perspectives, including ethical issues, societal issues, privacy and security, and informed consent for using BCI technology. This study explored the application of BCI technology in the management of neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and analyzed its role in motor rehabilitation, cognitive impairment intervention, and other aspects. It also analyzed issues that need to be addressed in terms of ethics, safety, and social impact of BCI. This study aims to promote the optimization and clinical application of BCI technology and provide a scientific basis for personalized neurorehabilitation in the future.
