A Corpus-Based Study of Shaanxi Image in the English Translation of “Shaanxi: A Cradle of Chinese Civilization”

Abstract: 基于自建《陕西：中华文明的肇始之地》汉英双语平行语料库，本文从高频实词、文化负载词等角度系统探究陕西地方形象建构及其背后成因与文化传播效能。研究发现：1) 《陕西：中华文明的肇始之地》英译本塑造的陕西形象主要表现为兼收并蓄、天人合一、踏实勤劳的积极正面形象。2) 译文传递了陕西文化的历史纵深性，有效实现了跨文化形象传播。该研究从语料库翻译学视角揭示了地方形象的再塑造路径，为新时代中国地方形象对外传播提供参考。This analysis is grounded in a self-built Chinese-English bilingual parallel corpus of “Shaanxi: A Cradle of Chinese Civilization”. This study, which examines the construction of Shaanxi’s image in the English translation, employs a multifaceted approach that incorporates the analysis of high-frequency content words and culture-loaded words. It delves further into the underlying causes and cross-cultural efficacy of this translation movement. The findings reveal that: 1) the English version of “Shaanxi: A Cradle of Chinese Civilization” portrays Shaanxi with a predominantly positive image characterized by inclusiveness, harmony between human and nature, and practicality and diligence; 2) the translation successfully conveys the profound cultural heritage of Shaanxi, thereby achieving effective cross-cultural image dissemination. This study may provide significant insights for promoting the international communication of Chinese local images.
