Retrospective Review of the first 500 Renal Transplants at a Transplant Facility: A Single Centre Experience

Year: 2025

Abstract: Aim: Kidney transplantation (KT) is the preferred form of renal replacement therapy (RRT) worldwide and is associated with a significant improvement in morbidity and mortality. The graft and patient survival rates in renal transplant are much higher than those in other solid organ transplantation. With the advent of newer immunosuppresants like tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, everolimus, etc. graft survival has improved drastically. However, much data is not available for this population. Methods: This retrospective analysis was done for the first 500 patients who underwent kidney transplantation at Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute & Research Centre. Outcomes like graft survival, patient survival, creatinine values at 12 months were obtained from patient records. Results: The majority of recipients, (86.4%, n = 432) were males with the rest being females (13.6%, n = 68). All 500 patients were started on tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and prednisolone. At the time of data collection (August 01, 2024), 444 patients had functioning grafts, 29 had experienced patient/graft loss and 27 patients were lost to follow-up. Of these 29 patients, 10 died with a functioning graft while 19 experienced graft loss. Death-censored graft survival rate at 1 year was 98.12%. 5 year death-censored graft survival rate was calculated in 45 patients in whom the requisite 5 year period had elapsed. Death-censored graft survival rate at 5 years was 87.5%. Patient survival rates at 1 and 5 years were 98.36% (n = 500) and 94.87% (n = 45), respectively. Conclusion: The 1 year and 5 years death-censored graft survival is comparable to reports showing graft survival rates across the world.
