THE BUBAK KAWAH TRADITION IN WALIMATUL 'URSY CEREMONY : AN 'URF PERSPECTIVE (Case Study in Tambar Village, Jogoroto, Jombang)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Bubak kawah is a tradition performed by the first child when they get married. According to the parent's beliefs, failing to observe this tradition will bring bad luck to the bride and groom in the future. Therefore, it is considered essential to adhere to the Bubak kawah tradition to avoid such misfortunes. This raises the question of whether the tradition falls under 'urf shahih or 'urf fasid. This research uses a qualitative approach with field research methods. The data sources include both primary and secondary data obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings of this research show that the Bubak kawah tradition in Tambar Village, Jogoroto District, Jombang Regency, is a practice carried out as a form of parental gratitude for their first child's marriage. There are three typologies found in the Tambar Village community: rational typology, mythical typology, and theological typology. The Bubak kawah tradition can be categorized as 'urf shahih if the community views it merely as a gesture of gratitude for the first child's marriage. On the other hand, it can be categorized as 'urf fasid if the community believes that the Bubak kawah tradition has the power to bring goodness and avert calamities or disasters for the bride and groom.
