Mathematical Creativity Through Open-Ended Problems on Linear Equation One Variable

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In solving problems and generating new ideas in mathematics, creativity is needed. However, students' mathematical creativity is still in the low category. This study aims to explore the mathematical creativity of junior high school students through LEOV open-ended problems, providing insight into how these problems can be used to develop students' thinking skills. This study produced open-ended questions that are valid, practical, and can be used to measure students' mathematical creativity. The research method used was a formative development research model (introduction, self-evaluation, prototyping, field test). The field test was conducted with 32 students from Grade 7 at a junior high school in Sungai Raya, Indonesia. The results showed that the questions developed were valid and practical. In addition, t 18.75% of students were classified in the excellent category, 28.125% in the good category, and 50% in the sufficient category, and only 3.125% were in the deficient category. The open-ended questions have the potential to measure students' mathematical creativity in terms of indicators such as fluency, flexibility, and originality. Therefore, the designed open-ended questions can be used to measure students' mathematical creativity.
