Integrating IIIF Images into Digital Humanities Databases: A Step-by-Step Workflow Proposal

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article outlines a step-by-step workflow for easily integrating high-resolution images into specialized databases. The workflow was designed to tackle key challenges, such as copyright restrictions and storage limitations related to high-resolution manuscript images. A central component of this solution is the seamless access to image fragments stored in external repositories thanks to the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), thereby eliminating the need for local storage. The workflow incorporates tools like CanvasFinder and the IIIF Image Manipulation Tool, enabling users to generate and share precise image links without requiring advanced technical skills. By following the "FAIR" principles, the workflow promotes the sustainability and broad usability of the data, providing a scalable model for image integration in Digital Humanities databases.
