Interpreter training from the perspective of Ukraine's EU membership
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article examines the problems of organising the educational process of teaching German to interpreting students who are to be prepared for simultaneous interpretation in the structures of the European Union in connection with Ukraine's status as a candidate for EU membership, and expresses serious concern about the reform of the ‘New Ukrainian School’, which, in an effort to reduce the number of compulsory subjects in secondary school, reduces the hours of foreign language teaching and does not define the number of languages required for to learn in grades 10- 12 of lyceums (grammar school in UK), which reduces the chances of higher education institutions to receive a sufficient number of applicants who would like to study German at philology faculties in order to acquire the speciality of a translator with a specialisation in simultaneous interpreting, whose training should be aimed at meeting the indicative requirements of EU employers. These requirements focus on the quality of the interpreter's content transfer (consecutive and simultaneous interpretation), the form of the interpretation and the interpretation strategies used to ensure adequate transfer of content. While most characteristics of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting are common, separate technical and psychological skills for simultaneous interpreters are highlighted. The emphasis is placed on the correct and timely switching of the microphone to the channel of the required language, which ensures the organic work of the conference, as well as on the endurance of the interpreter, who is able to provide high-quality simultaneous interpretation throughout the conference, even if the debate is delayed. The skill of quality control of one's own interpretation by a simultaneous interpreter requires more concentration than by consecutive interpretation, as the interpreter's attention is divided between listening to the speaker and interpreting them as well controlling the interpreted speech almost simultaneously.
