Abstract: The discharge of wastewater with a high concentration of surfactants into natural water bodies without prior treatment represents a serious environmental problem. In this research, the biodegradation of surfactant was studied in an upflow anaerobic reactor at a hydraulic retention time [HRT] of 0.25 days; at two surfactant concentration rates: 200±0.49 mg/L and organic loading of 5.92±0.5 kg COD/m3.d [experiments II, III and V] and 300±0.05 mg/L with an organic loading of 6.8±0.11 kg COD/m3.d [experiment VI]. The results showed that the reactor was able to remove 42.24% of the COD, and 86.65% surfactant biodegradation [LAS] [experiment V]. This contributes to the solution of a real problem of environmental pollution, as a sustainable and sustainable alternative.
