Correlation between gamma photon emission and magnetic islands in laser-driven plasma channel

Abstract: A recent theoretical study has identified a nontrivial magnetic island structure in a relativistic laser-driven plasma channel [Gong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 165002 (2021)]. Here, we investigate the generation of gamma photons within a laser–plasma channel, focusing on the influence of magnetic islands on photon radiation characteristics. Particle-in-cell simulations show a strong correlation between the spatiotemporal structure of magnetic islands and the energy and density distribution of the emitted photons. High-energy photons are primarily emitted at the edges of magnetic islands, while low-energy photons are predominantly emitted between the islands. Furthermore, the laser carrier-envelope phase (CEP) plays a crucial role in modulating the spatiotemporal distribution of magnetic islands, which subsequently affects the spatial and angular distribution of the photon radiation. These findings highlight the potential of the magnetic island structures and the laser CEP control to shape photon radiation characteristics.
