Multimodal Pain Regimens for Postoperative Pain Management

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This project aims to explore the optimization of multimodal pain management in the postoperative setting.A comprehensive literature search using PubMed focused on articles published in the last five years that assess multimodal pain regimens in postoperative care.Multimodal pain regimens are a new, evidence-based solution to the opioid epidemic.Recent research has determined that multimodal pain regimens have better pain control, fewer side effects, and reduced opioid consumption.Effective pain management is especially important in the postoperative setting.Best practices in multimodal pain regimens can be tailored for various reasons, including medication selection, dosage, timing, therapy duration, patient education, treatment of comorbidities, and tailored regimen based on surgery type. This research hopes to determine how the modern healthcare system can best determine what multimodal pain regimen is best for a patient when taking all these variables into effect. The findings highlighted the effectiveness of these regimens in improving pain relief and reducing opioid use. However, despite their benefits, multimodal strategies are not yet universally implemented.Further research is needed to establish pain surveillance protocols and intervention guidelines that would help provide guidelines to adjust therapies more efficiently and improve pain relief outcomes.
