“Warp and weft combined”: A meta-ethnography of nursing students' experiences participating in geriatric care services
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Given the irreversible global aging trend, the demand for professional geriatric care has increased dramatically. Nursing students play a vital role as crucial reserve forces. Our study used Meta-ethnography to assess nursing students' practical experiences in geriatric care. METHODS: 8 databases were searched until April 30, 2024. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the CASP tool. Full-text transcription was performed using the NVivo12 program to establish new concepts according to Noblit and Hare's seven steps of Meta-Ethnography. RESULTS: 24 medium or high-quality studies were included, involving 490 nursing students. Identified four core concepts: emotional interaction reconstructs nursing students' cognition of older adults; multiple challenges in geriatric care practice; competency progression to enhance career development; and teaching practices warp and weft combined. CONCLUSION: This study provides profound insights into nursing students' experiences in geriatric care. Emphasizing the integration of these experiences into nursing education provides valuable information for educators, policymakers, and practitioners.
