Acoustic properties and durability of porous low-noise pavement solutions to improve acoustic environment: a critical literature review
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Road traffic noise represents a significant source of noise pollution in residential areas. Studies have confirmed the availability of dissipating the sound energy generated by the interaction between tires and pavement by taking porous pavement. However, the acoustic properties of porous pavement suffer from attenuation over time under traffic and complex environment circumstances. Porous pavement with composite noise reduction mechanisms and the durability of acoustic functionality still needs further research. This paper synthesized the acoustic properties and noise reduction mechanisms including sound absorption and vibration damping of porous pavement. The available test methods of acoustic properties were discussed. Especially, the internal factors affecting acoustic properties were explored with special emphasis on the acoustic durability of porous pavement. This review discusses the effectiveness of porous pavement in controlling urban traffic noise and prompts in-depth thinking on the ecological development of pavement in urban sound environment upgrading.
