Type: article
Abstract: This article investigates the production of a terrestrial map and two celestial maps by Albrecht Dürer in the early sixteenth century, under the patronage of Emperor Maximilian I. The focus is on the artist’s collaboration with Johannes Stabius, the court historian and astronomer responsible for drawing the coordinates, and Conrad Heinfogel, who was in charge of fixing the stars. The article aims to address how these collaborative works showed that Dürer was the dominant influence in the final stages of the mapmaking. What is the nature of the artistic and scientific forces in early modern maps? His celestial maps were printed numerous times and distributed throughout Europe. They were a novelty in the sixteenth century, combining the precision of the positioning of the stars with the classical figures of the constellations. Futhermore, the article examines how Dürer’s cartographic works demonstrated innovation in form and representation.
