A Comprehensive Overview of Pneumonia: Classification, Etiology, Diagnosis, and Management

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Pneumonia remains a prevalent condition and continues to impose a significant burden on global health. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015, lower respiratory infections (LRIs) were the leading infectious cause of death and the fifth leading cause of death overall. Pneumococcal pneumonia accounted for more than half of LRI-related deaths across all age groups. Pneumonia usually manifests as cough, fever, pleuritic chest pain, exhaustion, and appetite loss. Headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and the lack of one or more of the classic symptoms are among the presenting characteristics of pneumonia that differ between children and the elderly. Successful pharmacologic selection and treatment of pneumonia depend on an understanding of the antibiotic sensitivity and resistance profiles of the local bacterial pathogens. The emergence of novel pathogens, particularly viral agents, continues to contribute to the incidence of pneumonia. Additionally, the growing problem of drug resistance among common respiratory pathogens presents an increasing challenge in management. Pneumonia is typically classified based on the patient's location at the time of infection, resulting in distinct categories, including community-acquired, hospital-acquired, and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
