The Role of Juvenile Hormones in the Development and Metamorphosis of Periplaneta americana

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Juvenile hormones (JHs) are vital endocrine regulators in insects, governing a wide range of developmental processes including molting, metamorphosis, and reproduction. In Periplaneta americana, a hemimetabolous insect, JHs are crucial for maintaining nymphal identity and inhibiting premature metamorphosis by interacting antagonistically with ecdysteroids. This study explores the biosynthesis, secretion patterns, and molecular signaling pathways of JHs during the various developmental instars of P. americana. Through experimental manipulation involving corpora allata ablation, methoprene (a JH analog) application, and gene expression analysis of JH-regulated transcription factors like Met and Kr-h1, the research reveals how precise hormonal balance is required for successful transition to adulthood. The findings emphasize the conserved yet unique role of JHs in hemimetabolous insects and provide insight into their potential as targets for pest control.
