Abstract: A field experiment was carried out in the Faculty of Science, University of Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, to evaluate the effects of clove size and planting orientation on the growth of garlic. Two different sizes of clove ranging from 3.00 – 4.00 g and 1.10 – 2.99 g for large and small cloves, respectively and three orientations (plumule up, down and horizontal) were laid out in factorial arrangement in Randomised Complete Block Design in three replicates. The seeds were planted in polypots which contained sterilised sandy-loamy soil and watered daily. Data were collected on plant height and number of leaves at weekly intervals for seven weeks. The results showed that the large cloves planted with plumule up gave the highest number of leaves and seedling height, which was significantly different (p ≤ 0.05) compared to those of the small cloves.
