Abstract: This paper explores the increasing significance of airports in the air transport sector and the complexities of airport management. It provides an overview of the role and importance of sustainability in airport operations and the role of airports in sustainable management, focusing on the challenges of integrating sustainability into operations. Using qualitative research, past studies, theoretical concepts, and the author's experience, it explores strategies for effective sustainability management. The paper also highlights best practices from leading airports worldwide, showcasing innovative solutions. Air transport is crucial for mobility, trade, and economic growth, connecting regions and supporting tourism and business. As air travel demand rises, airports face challenges in managing stakeholders, ensuring efficiency, and complying with safety, security, and environmental regulations. Given their significant carbon emissions, sustainable management in resource use, waste reduction, and community engagement is essential. While environmental sustainability has seen progress, social sustainability remains underemphasized. Future strategies should balance environmental goals with a greater focus on social responsibility and human well-being. This paper adds to the literature on airport sustainability by reviewing key concepts and strategies in sustainable airport management. It also highlights emerging research areas, with a particular focus on the increasing importance of social sustainability, which goes beyond traditional corporate responsibility to address broader issues such as community well-being. This study, based on qualitative research and the author's personal experience, may limit the generalizability of its findings. Additionally, reliance on existing literature and case studies may not reflect the latest innovations in sustainable airport management.
