Dante, a Versatile Latin Writer

Year: 2025
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Historically, Dante’s Latin has received much less attention than his vernacular works. Our contribution discusses Dante’s virtuosity in adapting his Latin style to the demands of the genre he is writing in. His eclogues are written in a pervasive Virgilian idiom. Deviations, such as the last word of the first eclogue, of Greek origin and most probably from Hugutio, are significant. Here the poet of the allegorical world of the shepherds morphs into the writer of the poem himself, expressing Dante’s own programmatic stance concerning the writing of epic poetry in Latin. Other Latin works of Dante show him adept in different stylistic frameworks. This is apparent in the vocabulary, which reflects medieval norms and is not afraid of the occasional calque from the vernacular. Furthermore, we see grammatical constructions which fit well with the technical idiom familiar to the contemporary reader from current texts such as the Digest. In short, our observations show an author who was no less adroit in navigating diverse Latin traditions than in his vernacular works – even if this aspect of his writing has not so far been studied adequately.
