The Model-Driven Design Integration Framework (MDDIF): Introduction to an Optimized Product Development Process and a Design for Manufacturing Case Study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The complexity of modern system and manufacturing process development often leads to inefficiencies in responsiveness, cost, and quality. This article presents a comprehensive methodology and framework that integrates Model-Based Engineering (MBE) with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT) principles to streamline the development cycle across system design, manufacturing processes, and production. A methodology-driven framework, Model-Driven Design Integration Framework (MDDIF), is proposed to support the optimization of product development through adaptive design integration. MDDIF unifies four interrelated model types: systems models, Design for X (DFX) models, engineering analysis models, and decision-making models. It leverages advanced simulation tools, co-simulation techniques, and a structured, iterative process to ensure the cohesive integration of design and manufacturing requirements. By emphasizing early-stage testing, verification, and validation through multidisciplinary simulations, the framework enables the identification of manufacturing constraints and improves product manufacturability during the design phase. The proposed methodology is demonstrated through a DFM case study involving a lubrication system scavenge gear pump. Results show that the application of MDDIF enables early detection of manufacturing issues, enhances system performance, and reduces material waste, production costs, and time-to-market—while maintaining high levels of quality and reliability.
