Placenta Previa Major: Prenatal Diagnosis and Uterus-Preserving Surgical Management in a Case Study From the Kingdom of Bahrain

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Placenta previa major is a significant concern in maternal healthcare due to its potential to cause postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), which can lead to morbidity and mortality following childbirth. PPH is generally defined as the loss of 500 ml or more of blood from the genital tract within 24 hours of the birth of a baby. PPH can result from various factors, including uterine atony, retained placental tissue, trauma, and placenta previa. Placenta previa, where the placenta is abnormally positioned over or near the cervical opening, is particularly concerning due to its significant risks for both maternal and fetal health. This case report focuses on placenta previa major as it represents one of the most severe complications in obstetrics, often leading to substantial bleeding that requires meticulous management to protect both the mother and the newborn. This case illustrates how prenatal imaging can guide the management of suspected placenta accreta. Despite suggestive imaging features, intraoperative findings confirmed placenta previa, emphasizing the need for surgical flexibility and appropriate use of hemostatic techniques.
