Abstract: Martin Droeshout, the younger (1601–40 or later), known for the engraving of William Shakespeare that fronts the 1623 Folio, was the son of Michael Droeshout (c.1578–1638) and Susanneke van der Ersbeck—not Dominick Verricke [Dominique ver Ecke]. Archives in the Netherlands, England, and Spain have yielded valuable information on the Droeshout family of engravers and painters, which I discuss in three essays: ‘Martin Droeshout Redivivus: Reassessing the Folio Engraving of Shakespeare’, Shakespeare Survey, 60 (2007), 237–51; ‘Droeshout’, Print Quarterly, 27.3 (2010), 253–62; and ‘Facing Shakespeare: The Martin Droeshout Engraving’, Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England, 30 (2017), 16–35. But I now discover that I misread the entry for Dominick, who was not Michael’s second wife but his servant. Michael married four times and had five children. His first wife, Susanneke, whom he married in 1595 and who apparently died in 1606 or 1607, was the mother of all his known offspring, including Martin.
