The effects of limb suction during arterial occlusion on arterial baroreflex in humans

Abstract: Venous distension in arms evokes sympathetic activation and alters sympathetic baroreflex sensitivity (SBRS). However, whether venous distension in legs affects the arterial baroreflex was unknown. We found that leg venous distension elevated SBRS and shifted the midpoint (T50) of the SBRS curve rightward, which may contribute to the sympathetic activation during venous distension. These findings offer novel insights into the mechanism of autonomic regulation during physiological stresses that can lead to limb venous distension.
