Effectiveness of Nurse Led Interventions on Clinical and Psychological Parameters of Patients Suffering With Lung Cancer

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Clinical Trial
Abstract: Background of the Study: Patients diagnosed with lung cancer experience numerous challenges, including not only the physical impact of the disease and its treatment but also significant psychological distress such as anxiety, depression, and diminished quality of life. Nurse-led interventions have emerged as an effective approach in cancer care. Nurses, who interact closely with patients, play a vital role in providing health education, managing symptoms, offering emotional support, and ensuring continuity of care. Such interventions can improve treatment adherence, enhance symptom control, and reduce psychological distress among cancer patients. Objectives of the Study: The study aimed to: Assess the clinical and psychological status of patients with lung cancer in both experimental and control groups. Evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions on clinical and psychological parameters in the experimental group. Compare pre-test and post-test scores between the experimental and control groups. Determine the relationship between baseline clinical and psychological parameters in both groups. Identify the association between baseline clinical and psychological parameters and selected socio-demographic variables. Methodology: An evaluative research approach was adopted for this study. A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group design was used. The study was conducted among 20 patients with lung cancer from HCG Cancer Hospital Hubballi, Redon Cancer Hospital Hubballi, and Karnataka Cancer Research Institution Hubballi. A non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the participants. Results: The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in clinical parameter scores in the experimental group, whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. Psychological parameters also improved significantly only in the experimental group. A strong correlation was found between clinical and psychological parameters in the experimental group. Additionally, certain socio-demographic variables were significantly associated with baseline clinical and psychological levels. Conclusion: The study concluded that the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) approach was effective in improving participants’ knowledge. Nurse-led interventions resulted in a significant and sustained improvement in the quality of life of lung cancer patients, with greater improvement observed in the experimental group compared to the control group.
