Proposal Ecofriendly In-House Inhibitor for Mitigating Corrosion in The Algerian Oil and Gas Industry: Electrochemical Analysis, Surface Morphology and Mechanical Properties
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As global demand for natural gas rises, Algeria is boosting production to keep pace. However, this surge strains the country’s extensive pipeline network. SonatrachTM, Algeria’s national oil and gas company faces persistent challenges from metal corrosion, resulting in significant economic losses [1]. To address this, there is a growing interest in eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors. Extracts from a Calotropis Procera, offer a promising green alternative to traditional inhibitors, which pose environmental risks due to their toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation. The extracts of the several local plants were evaluated for their corrosion-inhibiting properties on carbon steel. Electrochemical techniques, including potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, were employed to assess the inhibition efficiency under simulated operating conditions. The experimental findings unveiled the exceptional inhibition efficiency exhibited demonstrated the remarkable ability to form protective films on the metal surfaces, effectively suppressing both anodic and cathodic corrosion reactions. This research highlights the potential of the local plants as a green corrosion inhibitor, offering a viable solution for mitigating corrosion in the Algerian oil and gas industry while promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the reliance on hazardous chemical inhibitors at 60 °C.
