Osteoplastic Materials for the Replacement of Defects and Deformities of the Mandible – a Systematic Literature Review
Year: 2025
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: The aim of the study is to summarise the available data characterising the manifesta琀椀ons, clinical course, diagnosis and treatment of defects and deformi琀椀es of the mandible. An analysis of current scien琀椀昀椀c, experimental, and clinical studies was conducted based on a review of medical literature from the Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases over the past 10 years. When planning reconstruc琀椀ve surgical interven琀椀ons in the maxillofacial region, the primary goal is not only to restore func琀椀on but also to restore the anatomical integrity of the facial skull and restore the facial contours.Restoring the harmonious propor琀椀ons of the facial skull is one of the key tasks in maxillofacial surgery. The choice of osteoplas琀椀c materials and methods of reconstruc琀椀ve surgery in the treatment of defects and defor-mi琀椀es of the mandible must meet the following requirements: be as reliable as possible, restore the func琀椀on of the den琀椀琀椀on, not cause signi昀椀cant facial aesthe琀椀c disturbances, and have a minimal risk of complica琀椀ons. The correct choice of plas琀椀c replacement for a mandible defect is a complex and not yet fully resolved problem that depends on many factors and must be selected individually, taking into account the loca琀椀on, size of the defect, the cause of its occurrence (tumour, trauma, in昀氀ammatory processes, etc.), the pa琀椀ent's age, concomitant diseases, the clinic's equipment, and the surgeon's experience.A promising direc琀椀on in mandible reconstruc琀椀on is the replacement of signi昀椀cant defects with the simultaneous use of osteo-replacement material and dental implants, which allows for high-quality orthopaedic rehabilita琀椀on with improved chewing e昀케ciency. In view of the above, improving the e昀昀ec琀椀veness and speeding up the treatment of pa琀椀ents with mandible defects and deformi琀椀es is based on the correct choice of surgical interven琀椀on in each speci昀椀c case, the selec琀椀on of the op琀椀mal op琀椀on for osteoreplacement and reconstruc琀椀ve materials, as well as ra琀椀onal prosthe琀椀cs.One way to solve this problem is to replace large defects of the mandible through the simultaneous implanta琀椀on of dental implants and the use of endoprostheses for the temporomandibular joint. These issues remain understudied and are of considerable scien琀椀昀椀c and prac琀椀cal interest.
