Abstract: 纽曼是自由教育思想的集大成者，他在《大学的理想》一书中深刻阐述了理智的特征以及对完成大学使命的重要性。当今高等教育在实用主义哲学观的影响下，导致理智教育的缺失，大学教学越来越功利化和工具化。针对这一严峻形势，通过探讨纽曼对理智教育的定义、重要性以及实施措施，对于现今的高等教育具有重要的启示意义。Newman, a master of liberal educational thought, profoundly expounded the characteristics of reason and its importance to the fulfilment of the university’s mission in his book “The Ideal of the University”. Today’s higher education is under the influence of pragmatism philosophical outlook, which leads to the lack of reason education, and university teaching is becoming more and more utilitarian and instrumentalised. In view of this serious situation, by exploring Newman’s definition of reason education, its importance and implementation measures, it has an important significance for today’s higher education.
