Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Cancer remains a significant health challenge in Africa, with limited access to conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Stem cell therapy, offering a promising alternative, has garnered increasing attention as a potential treatment modality. This paper explores the recent progress of stem cell therapy in cancer treatment within the African context, examining its applications, challenges, and future prospects. It discusses the various types of stem cells utilized, including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and induced pluripotent stem cells, and their applications in cancer treatment, including cancer immunotherapy, tumor microenvironment modulation, and tissue regeneration. Furthermore, the paper highlights the challenges faced by African nations in implementing stem cell therapy, such as limited infrastructure, lack of skilled personnel, and the high cost of treatment. Finally, the paper discusses strategies to enhance the development and implementation of stem cell therapy in cancer treatment in Africa, including strengthening research collaborations, establishing regional stem cell banks, and fostering capacity building initiatives. By exploring the potential of stem cell therapy and addressing the existing challenges, African nations can work towards improving cancer outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for their populations.
