Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The Spousal Neglect Assessment Scale (SNS-A) was developed to assess the multidimensional nature of spousal neglect in dependent relationships. This mixed-methods study (qualitative and quantitative) aimed to create and validate the scale, focusing on four domains of neglect physical neglect, emotional neglect, instrumental neglect, and cognitive neglect. The initial item pool was developed based on theoretical frameworks from the APA, DSM-5, and attachment theory, and refined through literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions with married individuals experiencing relational dependency. In Pilot Study 1, 50 participants rated the clarity and relevance of 70 items, leading to the refinement of 30 items. The main study included 232 married adults aged 20–45 years from different area of Pakistan, selected through convenient sampling. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) revealed that the final scale, consisting of 16 items, demonstrated strong factor loadings, internal consistency, and model fit. The Cranach’s Alpha for the total scale was 0.92, indicating excellent reliability. Convergent and discriminate validity analyses further confirmed the scale’s ability to measure distinct dimensions of neglect, while test-retest reliability demonstrated stability over time. The study provides a valid and reliable tool for measuring spousal neglect and offers implications for clinical practice and future research on relational dependency and abuse.
