The Role of a Surgical Assistant in Microvascular Flaps in Head-and-Neck Reconstruction

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: Microvascular flap surgery in head-and-neck reconstruction is intricate and resource-intensive. The presence of a skilled surgical assistant may impact operative efficiency and patient outcomes. Objective: To evaluate the influence of surgical assistants on the success, complications, and operative parameters of microvascular flap procedures in head-and-neck reconstruction. Materials and Methods: A prospective and observational study involving 200 patients undergoing microvascular flap surgeries was conducted. The patients were divided into two groups based on the involvement of a dedicated surgical assistant. Data on flap success, complications, and operative time were collected and analyzed. Results: Flap success rate was significantly higher in the group assisted by dedicated surgical assistants (98%) compared to the nonassisted group (90%). The mean operative time was reduced by 45 min on average. Complication rates, including flap failure and infection along with donor site complications, were lower in the assisted group. Conclusion: The presence of a dedicated surgical assistant significantly improves surgical outcomes and reduces complications in microvascular flap surgeries.
