Ingestible Device for Noise-resilient Bioimpedance Monitoring in Gastrointestinal Tract

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This work demonstrates the first Bluetooth®-enabled ingestible device capable of continuous, noise-resilient monitoring of epithelial bioimpedance, a surrogate for barrier function and inflammatory processes.Existing ingestible devices cannot transmit bioimpedance data beyond the esophagus, limiting understanding of its relationship with tissue histology. We address this technological gap, by minimizing measurement variability associated with hardware limitations of low-power integrated potentiostat circuitry. The flexible bioimpedance sensor features a tetrapolar microelectrode array treated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) for mitigating interfacial impedances and contact resistance.Sampling at 10kHz, sample-to-sample magnitude variation was reduced by 58.7% and 68.3% on control and treated tissues, respectively.Electrochemical characterization confirms the ability of the device to dynamically differentiate tissues in motion, marking significant progress toward the use of bioimpedance as robust feedback for gastrointestinal (GI) diagnostics.
