Geotechnical risk management in mine and underground construction

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction. Mine and underground construction are associated with the risk of accidents due to complex natural and man-made processes. To assess, predict and reduce these risks, a dynamic approach based on risk management theory and consideration of negative interactions between natural and man-made factors is needed. Purpose of the research. Examining the process of geotechnical risk evaluation and management within coalmine, mine, and underground construction projects. Materials and methods. In order to streamline mine construction, a proactive approach is essential. This involves evaluating both naturally occurring and human-induced risks during the design phase, and developing predictive scenarios to anticipate potential critical situations. When choosing technological solutions, an integrated risk assessment is carried out to compare alternative options. Each key hazard is classified into several categories, for which a numerical “risk rating” is determined, reflecting the degree of its potential impact on the project. Results and discussion. Before justifying a strategy for managing geotechnical risks in mine and underground construction, their assessment is necessary. Despite the fact that most of the hazard indicators are the same for the construction conditions of coalmines and mines, the coefficients of significance of hazard indicators are different (established by the method of expert assessments). Conclusion. Quantitative risk assessment underpins the risk management process, allowing for identification of the most significant geotechnical risk factors. The analysis of data continuously coming from the control and measuring equipment makes it possible to calculate accident rates, determine requirements for various production characteristics, and develop systems to improve safety and reduce risks. Resume. Studies have established hazard indicators that must be taken into account when assessing geotechnical risk. Based on a comparative analysis of risk assessments against established criteria, a structural model for geotechnical risk management was established. A structural model for geotechnical risk management was established. This model supports the development of databases and knowledge bases for expert systems, which can aid in technical decision-making and the creation of standardized regulations.
