Evaluation of the compressed natural gas use efficiency for autonomous gas supply

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction. Autonomous gas supply systems (AGS) are a crucial alternative to traditional pipeline systems, especially for remote and peripheral regions. This article explores the efficiency of using compressed natural gas (CNG) as an autonomous gas supply technology and compares it with small-scale liquefied natural gas (SSLNG). Purpose of the research. The aim of the study is to conduct a technical and economic assessment of CNG, determine its application areas, and develop a methodology for calculating economic indicators to compare it with other gas supply technologies. Materials and methods. The study employed a case analysis of the southwestern coast of Crimea. The methodology included calculating capital and operational costs, gas production costs, and retail prices. Data on SSLNG were obtained using an LNG Investment Calculator for comparison. Results. The results showed that CNG is effective for consumers within a radius of 50–70 km, especially in dispersed locations. SSLNG demonstrated advantages for large consumers at distances exceeding 100 km. The retail price of CNG (0.76 RUB/kWh) was lower than SSLNG (2.31 RUB/kWh) but higher than pipeline gas (0.64 RUB/kWh). Discussion. The analysis identified key factors influencing technology choice: distance to consumers, their compactness, and consumption volumes. A dispersion coefficient (Kdisp) was proposed to refine calculations. The results align with previous studies, confirming the reliability of the methodology. Conclusion. CNG is an efficient solution for autonomous gas supply in remote and dispersed areas, while SSLNG is more suitable for large consumers over long distances. Combining these technologies can enhance regional gasification levels. Resume. The study confirmed the competitiveness of CNG and the need to consider geographical and economic factors when selecting a gas supply system. Suggestions for practical applications and directions for future research. The findings can be applied to plan gas supply in remote regions. Future research may focus on optimizing CNG logistics and refining methods for assessing the dispersion coefficient.
