Increasing the phosphorus and potassium content of manure mixtures by composting with different microorganisms

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Manure can be made more nutritious by composting.Cow manure compost had the highest nitrogen concentration (2.34%), while chicken and goat manure compost had higher phosphorus and potassium contents (2.12%) and 2.49%).Compost made from a mixtures of the three types of manure is likely to have a higher nutrient content than that made from only one type of manure. The objective of this research is to obtain a manure mixture with the highest phosphorus and potassium content through a composting process using several microorganisms. The research was carried out at Pest and Plant Disease Laboratory, Payakumbuh State Agricultural Polytechnic, from July to October 2023.The composting process started by mixing goat, cow, and chicken manure, followed by adding decomposer microorganisms which were Trichoderma sp, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and EM4 as treatments and no microorganisms as control.Based on the laboratory analysis conducted, the highest phosphorus content (2.76%) and potassium content (5.0%) were found in chicken manure.Meanwhile, cow manure had a lower phosphorus content (1.9%) and potassium content (2.5%).Goat manure had the lowest phosphorus content (1.29) but higher potassium content than cow manure (3.2%).The mixture of manures decomposed with P. Fluorescens experienced an increase in phosphorus content to 3.65%, higher than those decomposed with EM4 (3.16%), Trichoderma sp (2.93%), and no added microorganisms (3.18%).In addition, the added microorganisms were able to increase the potassium content of the manure mixture in general. However, the manure mixture decomposed without microorganisms (control) had a higher potassium content (6.29%) compared to those decomposed with EM4 (5.91%), P. fluorescens (5.9%) and Trichoderma sp.(5.4%).
