Evaluating the Physical and Mental Health of Instrumentalists through the lens of Ergonomics

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Musicians face unique occupational health challenges that extend beyond physical strain. This presentation explores how the three-domain framework of Ergonomics can be applied to better understand the complex factors affecting musicians' health. Physical ergonomics examines the risks of repetitive strain injuries and poor posture. Cognitive ergonomics focuses on mental workload, performance anxiety, and concentration demands, which can compromise both health and performance quality. Organizational ergonomics reveals the broader systemic issues, such as irregular work hours, financial instability, and unsupportive workplace cultures, that contribute to chronic stress and health concerns. Together, these domains offer a holistic perspective, emphasizing the need for integrated strategies that prioritize not only physical well-being but also psychological and organizational support. By framing musicians’ health within this ergonomic model, stakeholders—including educators, employers, and policymakers—can develop more effective interventions to create safer and more sustainable working environments for music professionals.
