Considerations on Developing an Energy Management System for a UAV using Three Electrical Power Sources

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This research examines the development and implementation of an energy management system for a UAV powered by a hybrid setup of photovoltaic cells, a fuel cell, and a Li-Po battery. The EMS is designed to ensure efficient energy generation, transmission, and utilization, maintaining a stable electrical current essential for the UAV's operational integrity. The system employs a control program based on a computational algorithm, optimizing energy usage across various flight conditions and enhancing the UAV's autonomy and reliability.Through laboratory and in-flight testing, the EMS demonstrated effective management of diverse energy sources, adapting to fluctuations in solar radiation and ensuring uninterrupted power supply. The findings highlight the photovoltaic system's significant contribution to the UAV's energy mix, supporting long-duration flights and reducing battery dependency. This study underscores the potential of integrating renewable energy sources into UAV systems, offering insights into extending their operational capabilities for a wide range of applications.
