Abstract: Bio-inspired and soft robotics represent a paradigm shift in robotic design, transitioning from rigid, metallic frameworks to adaptive, compliant, and lifelike machines. Inspired by nature's evolutionary solutions, soft robots utilize flexible materials and distributed actuation to enable safe and adaptive interaction with humans and unstructured environments. This comprehensive review explores the key elements of soft robotics—material innovations, actuation mechanisms, bio-inspired design strategies, and application domains. The integration of stretchable electronics, smart polymers, and artificial muscles has accelerated progress, allowing for biomimetic locomotion, variable stiffness manipulation, and enhanced safety. Furthermore, this paper identifies pressing challenges, including durability, energy autonomy, and control complexity, and outlines future trends such as AI integration, self-healing capabilities, and sustainable fabrication. Bio-inspired and soft robots are poised to revolutionize medicine, environmental exploration, and personal assistance, transcending the limitations of traditional robotic systems.
