Performance estimation of a steam-turbine driven multistage compressor system

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Deterministic model to estimate performance parameters of the steam turbine-driven multistage compressor system (SDMSCS) in real time is introduced in this work. The approach emphasizes estimating the efficiency of individual SDMSCS elements under real-time operating conditions. As such, operating parameters and SDMSCS device elements that result in significant excess of energy consumption were identified. Case study was conducted on three multistage compressor units all driven by steam turbines at a local ethylene plant, to demonstrate the method’s performance. The model validation is conducted by comparing the simulated and actual energy requirements of SDMSCS. Moreover, the method uses SDMSCs design data as a reference point to estimate performance of system. The analysis calculated energy transfer per compressor stage, shaft power consumption, polytropic efficiency, turbine-extracted energy and mechanical efficiencies. In conducted case study, results indicated that cracked gas SDMSCS exhibited a significant performance drop, with a mechanical efficiency of 92.4%, compared to the design value of 97%. Propylene and ethylene SDMSCS showed less degradation, with mechanical efficiencies of 95.4% and 96.2%, respectively. The polytropic efficiency deviated most from the design in the cracked gas SDMSCS compared to the propylene and ethylene systems. The approach proved robust, effectively capturing all key device features.
