Abstract: Slavic linguistic, cultural and religious identity has traditionally been associated with Cyril and Methodius roots. The Cyrillo-Methodian dimension of Christianity is emphasized by all churches in the Slavic context that have adopted the Byzantine or also the Latin form of Christianity. The spiritual and cultural identity of the Greek Catholics (Uniates) in Slovakia is also closely linked to the legacy of Sts Cyril and Methodius. The study points in particular to the ideological and linguistic-cultural aspects of its development. Slovak Greek-Catholics see in the Byzantine rite, in the connection with the Roman Church and the Pope, and in the liturgical Church Slavonic language its peculiarities. The above mentioned three pillars of cultural-confessional identity are considered by the Slovak Greek Catholics not only as symbols of their Cyril and Methodius tradition, but they also perceive the Church Slavonic liturgical language as a precursor of the cultural development of the Slovak Greek Catholic confession, which uses the texts of the liturgical rites in the Slovak written language.
