Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The article explores the life and scholarly contributions of Fr. Michał Bobrowski, emphasizing his role in the discovery of the Supraśl Codex and his broader influence on Slavic studies and theology. Born in 1784 in Podlasie, he was deeply rooted in the Uniate Church tradition and received an education across different cultural and educational systems in Poland, Prussia, and Russia. He later studied at the University of Vilnius and pursued further studies in Vienna, Rome, and Paris, where he engaged with leading scholars such as Josef Dobrovský. Bobrowski was instrumental in cataloguing Slavic manuscripts, including work in the Vatican Library, and played a key role in advancing the study of Old Church Slavonic. His discovery of the Supraśl Codex in the Supraśl Monastery significantly contributed to the preservation of early Slavic literary heritage. Despite his academic success, he faced political repression due to his involvement in intellectual circles in Vilnius. Later in life, he served as a priest in Szereszów, continuing his scholarly work and correspondence with international researchers. His theological and philological legacy was influential in the broader context of the cultural and religious transformations in 19thcentury Eastern Europe. His work bridged Western and Eastern Christian traditions, reinforcing the importance of Slavic heritage within European culture.
